The Tiziano Project: Now in Kurdistan!

First day of class (photo from Tiziano website)

The Tiziano Project provides community members in conflict, post-conflict, and underreported regions with the equipment, training, and affiliations necessary to report their stories and improve their lives.

Executive Director, Jon Vidar, is currently training six student journalists in Hewlêr (Erbil) how to ‘tell and distribute their stories through new media’ and ‘empowering them to produce firsthand narratives of their lives and to shape the world’s perception of their culture and conditions.’

The reporters-in-training are Shivan Sito, a graphic designer and an aspiring photographer; Sazan Mandalawi, a regular contributor and weekly columnist for the Kurdish Globe; Rebin Fazil, a journalist and founder of Ozone Magazine, a scientific magazine published in Kurdistan universities; Mohamad Nawzad Taib, who writes, translates and designs for both online and print publications in the media department of the Hewlêr Chamber of Commerce; Savina Dawood, a business management student at the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr; and, Zana Ahmed Abdullah, who teaches at Ishik University. See more about them here on the Tiziano website.

You can follow them on the project blog or on twitter.

I, for one, look forward to following their work throughout the summer and beyond!

  1. Hi KB, thanks for profiling our organization. In fact, there are three mentors -Victoria Fine, Jon Vidar and Grant Slater- in the region training 17 students. There will be more information about our whole class shortly. Please keep following our work, our students are producing some great work.

  3. Muy interesante este proyecto, sobre todo aprendiendo de la experiencia de Jon Vidar, ya he visto unos trabajos audiovisuales suyos y me han gustado mucho.

    Thank you KB

  4. Hola Zinar,
Yo tambien conozco el trabajo de Jon Vidar. Sí, es un proyecto muy interesante y, creo yo, de extraordinaria importancia. Por eso, voy a escribir mas sobre estos 17 alumnos/periodistas y sus proyectos.
