The Supreme Court of Iran has confirmed the death sentence of Kurdish political activist, Zeinab Jalalian. Zeinab, 27, is from Maku, a city in the far northwest corner of Iran in province of West Azerbaijan. She was arrested in May 2008 in Kermanshah and accused of ‘waging war against God’ and belonging to the PKK.
After her arrest by security forces she was transferred to the Revolutionary Guard’s Intelligence office in the same city. In January 2009 a revolutionary court in Kermanshah held a brief trial, lasting only a few minutes and with no lawyer present, where Jalalian was given the death penalty for moharebeh and acting against national interests. Moharebeh is the term used in Sharia law to describe a major crime committed against Islam and the state. It is what Ehsan Fattahian had been charged with.
Jalalian was held for eight months by the infamous Ministry of Intelligence and National Security (VEVAK). She is now in Sanandaj prison, in solitary confinement, and on the verge of execution. Her health is extremely poor as a result of the torture and conditions in the prison. The authorities have refused her medical attention and visits with her family. See UPDATE on Jalalian and her lawyer here (03 July 2009).
The following letter has been posted on various websites:
Dear Human right organisations
My name is Ms Zeinab Jalalian.
I am 27 years old Kurdish female, political prisoner, in Iran prison.
My Death sentenced was confirmed by Iranian Supreme Court.
I am currently ill, because of torture and I don’t have any lawyer to defend me. I want to tell you that trial took only few minute.
Court told me: ‘You are a God’s enemies. Have to be hanged very soon.’ That was all my court process.
I asked judge to give me permission to say good bye, to my mother and family, before execution, he told me ‘shut up’ and rejected.
